Twitter and Facebook are likely to face a ban in India if they fail to comply with the center’s latest guidelines for social media sites released three months ago. The deadline for following the rules is Tuesday.
According to IANS, social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and others were expected to follow the rules published in the Gazette of India on February 25 under the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules, 2021. According to reports, social media sites have so far refused to follow the guidelines. The new rules issued by the center will take effect on May 26.

According to the IANS report, except for one Indian social media firm, Koo, none of the top social media intermediaries have assigned a resident grievance officer, chief compliance officer, and nodal contact individual, as required by the guidelines.
According to sources, the government is not pleased with social media platforms’ failure to follow the laws.
Facebook says that it ‘aims to comply‘ and will continue to discuss the issues with the government on the new IT rules.
